The Key Word is Pride: When employees have a keen sense of pride for the company they work for, something magical can happen.
Most agree that all three of these approaches can increase pride within a given company. However, in recent years, some companies have discovered a process that focuses less on the internal processes and more on external processes where the company seeks a social impact, a set of activities that gives back to society both locally and internationally, and thus finds ways to solve problems and achieves goals that benefit society in a broader sense.
Examples include: Amazon, Microsoft, Disney, Star Bucks, Google, Walmart, Coca Cola, Wells Fargo, among many others who have programs that focus on literacy, health services, food security, poverty alleviation, disaster relief, and environment protection, climate change among many other activities.
While this web site welcomes support from these larger companies, our focus is on smaller companies where employees are encouraged to participate not only by donating a small amount of money each month, which is then matched by company funds, but also provides employees the opportunity to participate in a ten-day expedition that benefits villages in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Evidence over several years demonstrates that when groups of employees participate in these overseas expeditions and see how their company benefits people at the world level, they return home and share their excitement with the other employees. After several years, with different employees having the same experience, a much broader sense of pride characterizes these employees, with very interesting changes in productivity, commitment, and engagement.
